Dr. Mariel Szapiel is a board-certified neurosurgeon. She joined the Orlando Health Physicians Neurosurgery group as Director of Functional Neurosurgery in 2018. Functional Neurosurgery is the subspecialty of neurological surgery which performs surgical management of treatment resistant neurological disorders such as movement disorders, i.e., Parkinson’s disease and essential tremor; epilepsy, and pain.
In 1999, Dr. Szapiel graduated with a bachelor’s degree in industrial microbiology from the University of Puerto Rico, Mayaguez. She then went on to obtain her medical degree from the University Of Puerto Rico School Of Medicine, San Juan. Afterwards, she completed a surgical internship at the Department of Surgery at the University of Puerto Rico, Medical Sciences campus. Dr. Szapiel then performed her residency training in neurological surgery at The Ohio State University. Following her residency, she completed fellowship training in Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery also at The Ohio State University under the tutelage of world renowned neurosurgeon Dr. Ali Rezai. Prior to joining Orlando Health, Dr. Szapiel was in practice in Denver, Colorado where she was in charge of the functional neurosurgery program at Swedish Medical Center.
Dr. Szapiel’s expertise includes placement of deep brain stimulators for movement disorders; neuromodulation for medically refractory epilepsy including: vagal nerve stimulators and responsive neurostimulation device (Neuropace) ; and placement of stimulators for pain including occipital nerve and spinal cord stimulators. She also performs general neurosurgery procedures such as spine surgery of cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine and removal brain tumors.
Dr. Szapiel has been featured in journal publications, authored book chapters, presented research and lectured nationwide on a variety of neurological topics. She is member of the American Society for Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery, the North American Neuromodulation Society, the American Association of Neurological Surgeons and the Congress of Neurological Surgeons. Additionally, she is fluent in both English and Spanish.
