A 15-year-old boy from the West Midlands, UK who was born with a hole in his heart is set to be an Olympic torchbearer.

Charlie Mugglestone, from Walsall, has recovered from a series of medical problems, including epilepsy, to become a runner and triathlete. He has been told he will be one of the runners carrying the Olympic flame from Birmingham to Coventry on 1 July.

He said:

“It’ll be something I’ll never forget – something that will be passed from generation to generation.”

He found out he had been given a conditional offer to carry the torch when he checked his emails at school.

“Mum had told me she’d nominated me but I didn’t expect to be chosen or shortlisted,” he said

His mother Angela said she was very proud of what her son has achieved after the family were warned by doctors that he might never grow fully.

She said “He’s now a 5’9″ strapping boy and does triathlons, 10k races and is in the school cross country team.”
